A Perfect Murder

An astonishing track from The Glove's Blue Sunshine, a side-project of Robert Smith from The Cure and Steven Severin from Siouxsie & The Banshees. Jeanette Landray, who has some gorgeous and rich songs in a far too sparse discography, provided the main vocals for the album but doesn't appear on this song.

Night Breathing

Huey Lewis & The Muse

Mr. Lewis is a man of more depth than might be imagined, at first... (He can out-act Gwyneth Paltrow - you ever see Duets?) For Heart & Soul, he appears to have lifted the guitar-line from a song from chamber-avant-pop heros Penguin Cafe Orchestra's first album.

The Serpico Influence & Detective Rick Lee, Hipster Cops

HipsterCops is a new Tumblr created with the aim of exploring the unique phenomenon of the Hipster Cop. Although the phenomenon's profile is now raised thanks to Detective Rick Lee's presence at the Occupy Wall Street protest in New York City, it would be erroneous to imagine that Mr. Lee is its non plus ultra. He is nothing if not the heir to a lengthy and rich history, dating back past punks, hippies, beatniks and Zoot suit rioters to the very origins of the hipster itself.
Topics covered on the blog include The Serpico Influence, The Hipster Cop in Literature, Korova, Dan Bejar of Destroyer, and much more.

Cargo Cult - Thums Up! Miami Bass & Baile Funk Mix

I came across an old trove of Miami Bass vinyl & cd-rips from way back last night and, being overtaken by the moment, decided to put together a scrappy, dirty mix of Miami Bass classics, covering the leading lights of the scene like 2 Live Crew, L'Trimm, Egyptian Lover, MC Shy D, and so forth, as well as a lot of related baile funk and southern bass track that don't necessarily fit , but don't feel out of place. Except for INOJ. INOJ always sounds out of place.

SANGRIA SUMMER WIND-DOWN + D'EON Remix of Tim Hoover

Wilson Gowan and I are finishing up a summer of sanguine-tinged Thursday evenings of disco, house, early 80's R&B and boogie at Blue Dog with the final Sangria Summer night of the year at the Blue Dog Motel. It's Thursday, August 25th, during the final Saint Laurent street sale of the season. Facebook RSVP and more details here.

Tim Hoover - Numbers (D'Eon Remix) by Woven Records

Jesse Dube-Smith (AKA St Robe) is at the helm of the Winnipeg-Montreal spanning label Woven Records, and has recently nabbed D'Eon for a remix of Tim Hoover's Numbers. It's a jungle-influenced scattershot post-industrial pummeling, a little more hi-fi than the D'Eon of yesteryear.

Here's a superb edit courtesy of Fernando, he of Redux Records (Leeds label home to Greg Wilson, amongst others).

People Love Boats

In my old age, I'm losing my sense of taste. That has to be the reason why I'm currently listening to Real Ibiza 6 and not this excellent mix that dapper, fellow barbe-rousse Jesse R. Cumming. Chances are you've probably heard him DJing 'round the Mile End neighbourhood at Buvette Chez Simone and Sparrow.

Landscape & Silence

Formerly Sandy & The Sunset Gang, Kook is a nice slice of left-field disco from Hawaiian-born Sandy O'neale, produced by Yukihiro Takahashi, Haruomi Hosono, & Ryuichi Sakamoto from Yellow Magic Orchestra, from her LP Earthly Pleasures. Besides the gold-to-my-ears production (anything that seems like it could be part of a video art performance from 1983 I love, really), it's a solidly built song, and Sandii's voice has many of the same characteristics that make Allison Goldfrapp so endearing. Were I to supervise the soundtrack to a remake of the Sean Connery/Wesley Snipes film Rising Sun about a murdered blonde hostess/prositute, this would be a key component. It would also have to be set in 1983.

Party Crash

The Change song features Luther Vandross on vocals, sampled by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis for Janet Jackson's All For You. Both O'Neal and Hikaru's songs were produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis.

Thursday, June 23rd at Blue Dog Motel: Tommy Bottega (DJ Ilya) & Jay Watts III

After a banner night at Blue Dog last Thursday during the street sale, we're heading into this week headstrong and feet-first with an appearance by DJ Tommy Bottega (nee DJ Ilya) - current resident at Korova Fridays and former resident at Sofa, proprietor of Afrokats Records, and stalwart 12 year veteran of the hip-hop, house and Afrobeat scenes in Montreal. Come prepared for plenty of summer dancefloor killers and fillers! Facebook link is on the poster above.

BIG DUMB HOUSE & Brandy

Re: Call You I'm never for big, dumb house music unless it has an accompanying big dumb chorus or hook to go with it, but there's something about the rolling beat, masterful samples and darker undertones to this track that gets me... Or it could be all the Neo-Citron.

SANGRIA SUMMER: Jeudi/Thursday Blue Dog Motel

Jay Watts III Sounds for Sockhops Mix

Tomorrow evening I'll be DJing along with Ottawa's Raph W Glass at the now-ascendant Blue Dog Motel's newest night, Sangria Summer. Every Thursday I'll be joined by guests from near and far showcasing the most sanguine and sometimes saccharine house-party songs from here and there, along with economically-priced pitchers of potent sangria. GET DOWN.

I have nothing personal against Tuneyards, but I'm just wondering if there's a mission to antagonize me. First, with wacky intercaps, and now facepaint? The precious yogurt commercial music I can ignore, whatever: innocuous enough.

Concrete Insertion In The Cosmos

Photograph by Hugues Erre

Signed by Apple Records on the basis of his Bolan-esque appeal, Ringo-approved psychonaut Chris Hodges released this 1972 single. Along with atypical Morricone-like flourishes and a propulsive rhythm lifted from the Amboy Dukes' Journey To the Center of Your Mind, it's embued with that spirit of intergalactic travel that informed Hawkwind's Silver Machine. Dig that sitar.

I Saw The Light

"It caused me to crank out songs at an incredible pace. 'I Saw the Light' took me all of 20 minutes. You can see why, too, the rhymes are just moon/June/spoon kind of stuff."
- Todd Rundgren on Ritalin and song-writing,
The Independent, July 14, 2004

Alan Arkin & Labour Standards

With two friends, he formed the folk music group The Tarriers, in which Arkin sang and played guitar. The band members co-composed the group's 1956 hit The Banana Boat Song, a reworking, with some new lyrics, of a traditional, same-name Jamaican calypso folk song combined with another titled Hill and Gully Rider.

No One Ever Tells You What It Costs

Melba Moore It's a Peach Melba (Promised Land re-edit)

Here's a couple-of-years-old classic re-edit of Melba Moore's 1977 song Promised Land, the second white label release from the mysterious Dutch label Moxie. The b-side on this is an equally stomping, mid-tempo edit of The Inner City Jam Band's What I Did For Love which I'll include on an upcoming mix. (The organ vamping throughout brings it to another level). Beg, borrow or steal - just acquire this somehow.

Blood Orchids

It could be the cold - the miserable, biting January wind and chill - but I'm really enjoying the Laurie Anderson by way of Angelo Badalamenti nature of this track. So, the soundtrack for the past couple of hours has been a lot of Pional (née Miguel Barros) on repeat, paired with the paranoid, claustrophobic atmospherics of Bot'ox.
